Palazzo Graziani

It is possible to reconstruct the history of Palazzo Graziani with some accuracy, especially starting from the sixteenth century, when the noble Perugian Graziani family decided to expand and transform the original medieval structure of the building.

It is not certain, from a historical point of view, the intervention in these works by the great architect Jacopo Barozzi, known as Vignola (1507-1573), of whom it is however ascertained that between 1554 and 1569 he worked in Umbria for the construction of some big projects.

New interventions on the Palace, after the Renaissance articulation of which evident traces still remain today on the facade, were carried out in the second half of the 18th century by Count Francesco Graziani and around 1820 by the last descendant of the family, Countess Anna Graziani Baglioni .

The latter, as Bonazzi recounts in his history History of Perugia, among others, in 1818 hosted Grand Duke Michele, brother of the Russian Tsar Alexander, in his apartment. On this occasion, the inexperience of the Grand Duke was at the origin of a fire that destroyed, among other things, a painting by Perugino and a canvas by Barocci.
